New single!

Add a comment

Eyes Tight Shut c/w R.E.S.P.E.C.T.E.T.C. is the second in the year of ButterflyPolite singles.

…and is available here for the princely some of one english pound.  (a.k.a. £1)

Eyes tight shut has been a live favourite for a while - and always causes some embarrassment with it’s awkward ‘U’ sound in the title for Andy to try to introduce, yet try not to sound ‘common’.  The eloqution lessons are not paying off, but fortunately he is spared that ignominy here, and the song can be enjoyed in a new studio recording.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T.E.T.C. is presented here at it’s delicate live acoustic best - in startling contrast to the version on The Mess We Made album.  Sarah’s beautiful voice is naked and exposed through this song, against just an acoustic guitar and sending shivers up the spine with each syllable.  Then, at the last moment, the rest of ButterflyPolite join in at their finger-in-ear beach-boys-harmony best.

Head over to the music page to have a listen.  Don’t forget last month’s single (If You Repeat / Unnatural Selection), and remember to head back next month for November’s offerings!

This has actually clocked in about 2 hours before the 19th October release date.  Woo hoo!

…this is not an April Fool.

In looking for interesting ways to assault the senses, ButterflyPolite have chanced upon ‘Sniffle Discs‘, made by Sony Germany.  They are, in effect, scratch-n-sniff CDs.

When we are inevitably signed to Sony Germany, we shall insist on all our releases being on Sniffle Discs, each album having identical artwork and only being identifiable by its aroma.  Our first releases shall be “Coconut”, “Oregano”, “Horses’ stable” and ” Gas warning scent”.

Mixes are done for the first Month of the year of singles, both in stere-ero and in glorious surround, for people so equipped.  (People with five point one ears).

Expect a release date announcement in the next few days.

Perhaps there should also be an over priced box set of mono mixes - they are apparently the new black.

Killing Music.

I thought home taping had already killed music.

This week, for the first time in some years, I bought a new album on tape - Peter Wyeth’s album “Safe, Sweet, Happy Journeys”, and lovely it is too - being as beautiful and delicate as Peter always is, and as hissy as tapes always were.

I thoroughly appreciate the two-fingers-to-the-world attitude implied by the decision to release it on cassette only, but also applaud the (perhaps unintended) effect on the listener.  By asking me to go to the extra effort of setting up (or remembering how to use) a tape player, then I am more inclined to sit and listen to it, rather than pop it on passively.  Also the short playing time per side means a concentrated listen is not an unreasonable thing to ask of this listener.  I have often decried the CD as killing music through nothing other than the format itself encouraging long albums of musical wallpaper to put on whilst you iron.  Here Peter Wyeth has said “you shall not iron, you shall try to remember what the ‘NR’ and ‘Type II’ switches on your tape deck do - and once you have worked that out you shall need to have a sit down and a rest.  Whilst you are sitting, why not listen to this relaxing music”.

Hands up…

…you’re surrounded!

Continuing the experiments we have been making in the land of Surround Sound Audio, ButterflyPolite are pleased to offer a FREE download of “Laid In Grass” (5.1 surround sound mix).  [A completely new recording of this song, mixed in surround].

The file a 16bit 44.1Khz .wav file, which is DTS encoded 5.1 surround.  To play this file, the data needs to be sent to a DTS decoding receiver/amp.  The simplest way of doing this (depending on your set up) is to burn the file as an audio CD and play the resultant CD in a CD/DVD player that is digitally connected to a DTS decoding receiver.  We have tried this, and it does work.

It may also be possible to decode this DTS .wav file in software if you have a surround playback system connected to your computer.  Your milage from this approach may vary, depending on how tech savvy you are.

We would love feedback on your thoughts on this experiment, and whether you would like to see/hear more surround mixes of ButterflyPolite.
